Women in sports. Whether you’re in front of the camera reporting on the game or enjoying the game from the stands, I think that all women who either work in or identify as a sports fan can agree on something: you have to prove yourself. It’s a common (and quite annoying) stereotype that women don’t know anything about sports. However, for the women I associate with, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. They keep up with stats/scores, go to sporting events often, and are very knowledgable about how the game is played. And the amount of women like this seems to be growing each day.
In fact, “of the 150 million American NFL fans, women make up 45% of them”. Women have become a vital and key demographic for professional sports, and their organizations have started to realize it. However, the way these major sports go about marketing to women isn’t always the best (Women’s Night at the Ballpark featuring free manicures…really?). I guess one of the most frustrating things to me as a woman who genuinely enjoys sports (baseball in particular), is that it’s usually assumed that there is some sort of incentive for me to go watch a game. “Oh you like to go because of the guys, right?” “Are they having like a ladies’ night tonight or something?” Um…no. As crazy as it might seem, I actually like going to the ballpark because BASEBALL IS FREAKING AWESOME. I love the game. I love the strategy. I love the crazy walk-offs. And ballpark food is pretty awesome too.
To conclude, I think that women who are sports fans and/or work in the sports industry ultimately have to battle with unfair stereotypes. However, every day there are women in this industry that are proving to everyone that regardless of their gender, they are just as knowledgable about sports as their male counterparts. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for the future of the professional sports industry.
To all my ladies out there, be bold in your passion and knowledge of sports! No shame in our game 😉
